It Takes a Village
The Winnetka Earth Day Challenge is a community-wide competition for people of all ages who live, work, worship, or attend school in Winnetka, and their friends. Participants challenge themselves to try new environmentally-friendly behaviors and report their progress daily. In addition to learning how to reduce your carbon footprint, you have a chance to win cash for the non-profit organization of your choice!
Why do the Earth Day Challenge?
We believe the solution to the planet’s biggest challenges lies in the power of individual choices and our collective action. Sometimes global problems seem too overwhelming for our daily lives. The Winnetka Earth Day Challenge gives you ideas for actions you can take RIGHT NOW to address these problems—as individuals and as a community. Plus, you get the opportunity to win money for the non-profit organization of your choice.
Before you start
We encourage all participants to read everything on the Challenge Overview, How It Works, and Q & A pages before getting started. This is important. Have a question after reading it all? Don’t hesitate to send us a message on our Contact page.
Sign up
First, sign up for the Challenge on the Login page any time after Friday, April 9. We will send you a confirmation email with a link you can use to record your actions. (Please allow up to 24 hours for the email to arrive in your inbox. The email will be from winnetkaearthday@gmail.com.) You can also log in directly on the Login page, once you have signed up. You may not record your actions until the Challenge begins on April 16.
Teams
You can create your own team, join an existing team, or participate as an individual (aka, join the “Community Team”).

Ready, Set, Go
- April 16th: The Winnetka Earth Day Challenge begins
- Start carrying out the actions you select for the Challenge
- Go online every day for two weeks to record your actions and post about your experiences on social media (optional)
- Earn points for your team—which helps you win cash for the non-profit organization of your choice
- April 30: The Winnetka Earth Day Challenge ends
- Winners will be announced on this website and on our Facebook and Instagram pages soon after the challenge is complete.
Prizes
Prizes may be awarded to a 501(c)3 charitable organization, or public agency, church or school in Winnetka and its neighboring communities. All organizations must be approved by the Winnetka Earth Day Challenge.
- $300 – First prize
- $200 – Second prize
- $100 – Third prize
- $100 – Fourth prize
- $100 – Fifth prize
